Many Glacier

Description

Named for the glaciers that grace the surrounding mountains, Many Glacier is a wonderful place to hike and view wildlife. Although nearby Lake Sherburne was not created by a glacier, but by a man-made dam, the glaciated valley in which it lies is quite beautiful. Swiftcurrent Lake, at the end of Many Glacier Road, brims with park services, from lodging and camping facilities, gift shops, and restaurants to trailheads for treks around the lake and into the backcountry. After the trail becomes passable (usually by mid-summer) the park's naturalist-led, 11-mile-round-trip trek to Grinnell Glacier is one of the park's most popular tours. For a more leisurely stroll, follow the Swiftcurrent Nature Tour. It follows the lakeshore in a 2.6-mile loop. Camping and Other Lodging. Historic Many Glacier Hotel is widely thought to be the most scenic of the park's grand lodges. Built in 1915 by the Great Northern Railway to entice tourists to travel by train to the mountains, the hotel is now managed by Glacier Park, Inc., and offers over 200 rooms at elegant prices. A restaurant, snack bar, cocktail lounge, and gift shop are located on the premises. Many Glacier Hotel is open only during the summer season. Swiftcurrent Motor Inn is located at the end of Many Glacier Road and offers affordable motel rooms and cabins. Amenities include a restaurant, a camp store, and a coin laundry. It is also open only during the summer. For further information concerning dates of operation, rates, or room availability, contact Glacier Park, Inc. (406-892-2525). Many Glacier Campground offers 110 sites for tents or RVs. Thirteen of the sites will accommodate vehicles up to 35 feet. The campground is open between early June and mid-September and offers flush toilets and a disposal station. Showers are available at the motor inn (tokens required). Sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Call Glacier National Park headquarters (406-888-7800) for more information.
