It looks just as a late-1800s Old West hotel should: a curvaceous redbrick Victorian embellished by elaborately carved white-sandstone windowsills and cornices. Inside are coffered ceilings, crystal chandeliers that reflect miniature rainbows, intricate woodwork, and a large collection of Victorian-era antiques. Each of the 93 guest rooms is different, though most have beds with towering wooden headboards and delicately patterned wallpaper. The hotel’s Diamond Belle Saloon couldn’t be more, well, saloon-like---right down to the ornate bar, the gallery seating area, the gun-fight re-enactments, and the ragtime piano. In fact, it’s said that this music helped inspire author Louis L’Amour, whose Western sagas benefited from his stays above the saloon in Room 222. The menu at the Mahogany Grill changes seasonally but features such fare as elk tenderloin and bison burgers. The hotel offers a variety of packages that combine stays with area sightseeing or activity options.
I loved the Strater Hotel. It felt like the old west. Great staff, great location, great room. We stayed on the 4th floor and our room was huge. I can't wait to go back.
The Strater is everything you would expect from a hotel built at the turn of the century. Do you know what is above the saloon door? If not, you haven't been there! No one forgets!
A lovely hotel straight out of the old west. Wonderful accommodations, wonderful staff, wonderful town. The Strater is right downtown, making it easy to get everywhere, and the boutique rooms are charming, cozy, and luxurious. If you go to Durango (and you must go to Durango), the Strater is THE place to stay.
Gorgeous furnishings, a saloon right out of Deadwood and the best little mountain town in America. Walking distance to everything you need: river, mountain biking, food, shopping, drinks, parks - the Strater has it all.
My husband and I first stayed at the Strater 20 years ago, and to this day it is our favorite hotel in the world! The passion and detail that went in to decorating every room and the common areas are evident the second you walk in each. And the warm and friendly hospitality extended by every employee is just as passionate. The Srater is truly a gem!
