Belvedere Mansion

Description

Owners of Belvedere Mansion and Gardens, a gingerbread-covered private home, welcome visitors for tours from mid-May to mid-November. The 22-room Italianate mansion, the largest in Galena, was constructed in 1857 for steamboat owner J. Russell Jones, who served as the U.S. ambassador to Belgium after the Civil War. The mansion is furnished with period pieces and Victorian items, including a Tiffany chandelier, a grandfather clock that won a grand prize in the Columbian Exposition, furniture that once belonged to Theodore Roosevelt, and objects from the estate of showman Liberace. Green velvet draperies from the set of the film Gone with the Wind, which character Scarlett O'Hara pulled down to make a dress, were purchased in an MGM auction and are now on display in the home. Tours inside the mansion last about 30 minutes. Visitors may stroll the Belvedere Gardens, containing seasonal flowers, a grape arbor, and formal boxwoods, at their leisure.
