Boone and Scenic Valley Railroad

The name Scenic Valley aptly describes what passengers see on the museum's daily summer vintage train excursions through central Iowa's rolling hills and across the tallest interurban trestle in the United States (156 feet high). Those taking a weekday or Sunday trip are pulled by one of the museum's diesel locomotives; a steam engine pulls Saturday visitors. A special 2-hour Saturdays-only jaunt takes a breathtaking ride to the area known as Wolf Junction, during which passengers are served dessert in the museum's "City of San Francisco" or "City of Los Angeles" cars, converted Pullman sleepers with a lounge and observation deck. Back at the indoor/outdoor museum, visitors will find old train cars and exhibits devoted to the history of area railways. Tours run daily from Memorial Day weekend through the end of October, weekdays at 1:30 PM and weekends at 1:30 PM and 4 PM. The dinner train operates through late November, and special holiday-themed tours are scheduled throughout the year. The indoor museum is open 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday, and 10 AM to 6 PM on Saturday and Sunday from Memorial Day to Labor Day; and 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday the rest of the year. The grounds are open year-round.
