In 1931, four rice fields were transformed into public gardens that, today, often make top-10 lists of the nation’s best. Themed landscape areas include Live Oak Allee, with trees planted as far back as the 18th century, and the Palmetto Garden, which features the Sabal palmetto, South Carolina’s state tree. The gardens also showcase 1,400 works by 350+ American figurative sculptors—the country’s largest collection.
Kids love the zoo filled with Lowcountry creatures; the Enchanted Storybook Forest, with storybook playhouses; and the Children’s Discovery Room and Sensory and Nature Trail. Seasonal offerings include a Butterfly House and Gullah cultural programs. Daily offerings include guided sculpture tours.
