The Butchart Gardens include 55 acres of manicured lawns, ponds, lakes, and exotic and native flowers. Once the site of a limestone quarry, the property was owned by Robert Pim Butchart and his wife Jennie. Through the years, she transformed it into a horticulturist's dream. The plan includes a rose garden with thousands of beds, arches, and arbors; a Japanese garden with maple trees, hydrangeas, bamboo, and the rare Tibetan blue poppy; and a formal Italian garden with a cross-shaped lily pond and sculptured trees and hedges. There is also a sunken garden. A restaurant on the estate offers lunch and afternoon tea. The Seed and Gift Store sells seeds of many of the flowers on the site.
