Clute’s Dry Dock

In 1852 Clute’s Dry Dock was constructed on the site known as Volvyders Dry Dock (1825). It could hold three boats under construction or being repaired. The dry dock now serves as a kayak or canoe launch in the center of an area ideal for exploring a still watered section of the 1842 Enlarged Erie Canal. The community that surrounded the Dry Dock was abandoned soon after 1907 when the Crescent Dam was completed and the water level of the River was raised 17 feet and the Erie Canal was moved to the Mohawk River.
