Copper Falls State Park

Description

High above the Bad River gorge, Civilian Conservation Corps-built log fences line the Doughboys’ Trail. It was named for the WWI veterans who returned to the Northwoods and cleared the original loop. The current 1.7-mile trail winds through second- growth forest. It’s quiet one minute then roaring the next when the Bad River or its tributary, Tyler Forks, plunges over outcroppings of lava on its way to Lake Superior. A disabled- access trail, broad with minimal rise, leads to the park’s best outlook, a deck overlooking Brownstone Falls, where Tyler Forks rushes over a precipice to meet the Bad. On Sundays, visitors are treated to a pancake breakfast in the CCC-era concession cabin.
