Custer State Park
Description
Custer State Park covers 71,000 acres and extends from the rolling foothills to the granite peaks of the Black Hills. The park's main attraction is its 1,500-head bison herd. Wildlife include elk, deer, antelope, mountain sheep, mountain goats, burro herds, and a prairie dog town. The park features hiking trails, four lakes, 335 campsites, 50 camper cabins, and four resort complexes. Creek Side Lodge, which opened in 2008, offers 30 rooms and is open year-round. Mt. Rushmore is 10 miles away; the Crazy Horse Memorial is about 20 miles. Handicapped-accessible facilities are available. A South Dakota state fishing license is required. Pets: Leashed pets are permitted. Reservations and fees: South Dakota has a central reservation telephone number for all state park campgrounds: 800-710-2267. There is a nonrefundable fee for each reservation made by out-of-state visitors. South Dakota state parks charge a nominal daily entrance fee.
