Affiliated with the World Forestry Center, this Washington Park museum has been a Portland icon since 1971. Its engaging, interactive exhibits highlight the importance of forests in our lives and are designed to delight anyone from ages 3 to 103. You can take a simulated raft ride (without the watery spray), or learn about different types of forests by “traveling” to Russia, China, South Africa, and Brazil.
You can also see Peggy the Train, a steam locomotive that once hauled timber, and the Petrified Stump, the 10-million-year-old remnant of a Giant Sequoia found in North Dakota. The museum store sells everything from books on the trees of Oregon to flying-squirrel hand puppets.
