Dunsbach Ferry Site

Description

Cornelius Claus Vandenburgh established a rope ferry at this site before 1705 connecting to a well established Native American trail north to Round Lake. This crossing was used by Henry Knox in early January 1776 when transporting 59 cannon from Fort Ticonderoga (NY) to defend Boston (MA) Harbor, “...as the ice was so much stronger there than at half moon.” The Ferry was sold to Henry Dunsbach in 1813. The site and ferry were abandoned in 1907. This is an excellent spot to launch a kayak to explore the I-87 Northway Twin Bridges from the water.
