Gateway Arch

Soaring 630 feet above the Mississippi River, the distinctive stainless-steel Gateway Arch commemorates both the city’s founding and President Thomas Jefferson’s successful efforts for westward expansion via the Louisiana Purchase. The Arch is the centerpiece of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial. Security measures require you to pass through a checkpoint; allow 30 minutes for this (more time in summer) before your scheduled tram ride to the top of the arch. Tip: Avoid summer crowds and long security-line waits by visiting the Arch at night.
