General William Hart House

William Hart had made his fortune trading in the West Indies by the time he led Connecticut’s Light Horse Militia (and armed his family’s merchant ships to harass the British) during the Revolution. He also had built this Georgian-style house (1767), one of Old Saybrook’s oldest. Tours highlight intriguing architectural details and authentically planted Colonial gardens, with different areas for vegetables and flowers as well as herbs used for cooking, dyeing, and medicinal purposes.
