Grand Caverns

America’s oldest show caves were discovered in 1804, when Bernard (Barnette) Weyer was hunting. Two years later, he opened them to curious paying guests. Civil War soldiers often explored them, and more than 200 Union and Confederate signatures remain. Tours take in popcorn, flowstone, drapery, shield, and soda-straw formations in chambers with evocative names like the Persian Palace, Grand Ball Room, Dante’s Inferno, Jefferson’s Hall, Bridal Chamber, and Cathedral Hall (the largest at 280 feet long and 50 feet high). Bring a jacket: temperatures are a constant 54 degrees.
