Grandfather Mountain

Description

At 5,946 feet, this is the highest peak in the Blue Ridge Mountains. A long and winding road leads to the top, and the popular Mile-High Swinging Bridge—a 228-foot-long steel-cable suspension bridge above a chasm—leads to breathtaking vistas. The park also has 11 trails that vary in degrees of difficulty from a gentle walk to a rigorous trek.

The Nature Museum has a collection of North Carolina gems and minerals as well as displays on regional wildlife like bears, cougars, and otters. Mildred’s Grill, in the museum building, serves a basic menu of soups, sandwiches, and salads. The Fudge Shop serves freshly made batches, often in seasonal flavors like pumpkin pie or peppermint candy.
