William Randolph Hearst’s spectacular, 165-room mansion---built between 1919 and 1947 through a collaboration with architect Julia Morgan---contains thousands of priceless antiques and works of art. Its 127 acres of grounds are equally spectacular, with gardens, terraces, guesthouses, and a Greco-Roman pool overlooking the Pacific.
Many dignitaries and celebrities have visited the castle, and you can, too, on a half-dozen different guided tours. At the base of the mountains is San Simeon (pop. 462), which is dwarfed by the castle and part of the 3,409-acre Hearst San Simeon State Historical Monument. Campgrounds and RV sites with hookups are available; reservations are highly recommended.
