Iao Valley State Monument

Description

Iao Valley was the site of King Kamehameha's bloody victory over the Maui army of King Kalanikupule in 1790. Park visitors enjoy wandering along the Iao Stream, which flows through the lush valley that receives some 400 inches of rain each year. At the end of the road is the Iao Needle, an erosional feature covered with vegetation, that rises sharply 1,200 feet from the valley floor. The park is open daily 7 AM to 7 PM.
