Jarvis Japanese Garden

Description

Among the tobacco farms and scrubby hills of rural Madison County, NC, Jack Jarvis has created an authentic Japanese-style garden on five acres of farmland. A landscaper by trade, Jarvis developed a passion for Japanese gardens while designing one for a client in the mid-1990s. Soon afterward he began work on his own. Lilly pads and huge lotus blossoms float on the surface of five spring-fed ponds that Jarvis dug with a backhoe, while hundreds of koi fish 's more than 500 years old. Equally exotic are the full-size trees, which include a Manchurian weeping cherry, a Chinese pistachio, a Himalayan pine, and a copperleaf beech. Highlighting Jarvis's extensive collection of oriental flowering plants are rarities like panicle hydrangea and blue indigo. Jarvis Japanese Garden is open to the public on weekends, and admission is free. If Jack Jarvis is available, he will happily show visitors around. The garden hosts a Lotus Festival every summer during the first week in July.
