Est. 1887; pop 1,130; elev. 4,191′. Lodging, restaurants, shopping, groceries, gas, Information Booth. Named for young Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce, this flourishing art community has a national reputation for its top quality bronze foundries and galleries. The Joseph Art Walk features life-size and larger bronze sculptures along Main Street. Summer events range from art and music festivals to Fishtrap to the famous Chief Joseph Days Rodeo in July. The Eagle Cap Extreme Sled Dog Race is an Iditarod qualifier that takes place in January. Call ahead to arrange a Valley Bronze foundry tour and to contact a backcountry outfitter.
