Kit Carson Chapel and Fort Lyon National Cemetery

Description

Kit Carson Chapel is made of the stone from the original Fort Lyon. Kit Carson died at Fort Lyon of tuberculosis. The chapel and cemetery are open to the public and provide a great opportunity for biking the byway from the chapel to the National Cemetery. Colonel John Chivington marched his troops to the Cheyenne's Sand Creek Reservation in 1864 from Fort Lyon. They marched 42 miles to attack the Indian camp at dawn. More than two hundred men, women, and children were slaughtered and the event became known as the Sand Creek Massacre.
