Museum of Art at The Ringling

First opened in 1931, this museum contains the world-class personal art collection of circus magnate John Ringling and his wife, Mable, as well as many later acquisitions. The footprint of the building itself recalls that of the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. The collection is no less grand, with many paintings by European Old Masters as well as American and Asian art and artifacts.

There’s also a sculpture-filled courtyard and a wing that houses special exhibitions. Guided tours of the permanent collection include one that offers just the European highlights and another that provides a more comprehensive, in-depth look. You can also arrange docent-led tours of the temporary exhibitions.

You could easily fill a day touring the Ringling complex, which also includes John and Mable’s lavish Ca’ d’Zan Estate and its equally lavish Bayfront Gardens; the Circus Museum; and a café, restaurant, and museum store. The Historic Asolo Theater and the Florida State University Center for the Performing Arts are also here.
