Palm Springs Windmill Tours

Travelers heading through the San Gorgonio Pass northwest of Palm Springs are greeted with a bizarre sight: thousands of giant windmills cover the desert floor and surrounding hillsides. This is the San Gorgonio Pass Wind Farm, where some 4,000 modern windmills (technically, they’re called wind turbines) harness the strong winds that whip through this pass. A company called Windmill Tours offers 90-minute, eco-oriented, guided tours of the wind farm. Enthusiastic guides take visitors among the windmills and explain how they work, why some are spinning madly while others aren’t moving at all, why the San Gorgonio Pass was chosen for the wind farm, and how much energy the windmills generate.
