Peaks of Otter Lodge

Here, you immediately get a sense of what life was like in the mid-1800s. There’s the old Polly Woods’s Ordinary (aka tavern), which provided travel necessities as early as 1840 (no longer operational), and about a mile walk from the visitors center is the Johnson Farm, which offers living-history demonstrations. And then there’s the 63-room Peaks of Otter Lodge, which was built in 1964 and also has tent and RV sites (book through ReserveAmerica), a restaurant, and a gift shop. Trails in the extensive system here are popular thanks to cooler summer temperatures, abundant wildlife, and hardwood forests. Hiking to the top of Sharp Top (one of the three Peaks of Otter) is a tradition.
