Quetico Provincial Park

Description

Quetico Provincial Park is the Canadian half of the Boundary Waters, a prime canoeing locale with over 1,400 kilometers of canoe routes. Approximately 12,000 years ago, the last glaciers receded from this area, leaving behind bedrock that became boulders and cliffs. With 4,700 sq km of public land, Quetico Provincial Park offers a contrast of forest and rock enjoyed mostly by those who float through. For canoes, there are six access points, where you may purchase permits and maps of the area. If guides are needed, there are numerous outfitters in the area. The forest is made up of black spruce, jack pine, red pine, white pine, trembling aspen, white birch, oak, elm, silver maple, yellow birch, and basswood. American Indian pictographs made by the Anishnabe Tribe can be found on cliff faces. Due to human hand oil, however, they are quickly fading. It is asked that you not touch the pictographs but instead leave a gift of tobacco, sage, or cedar as a gesture of good will. Should you wish to drive in and camp, the Dawson Trail Campground at French Lake is the only option. Here enjoy any of the campsites, 49 of which offer electricity. You'll also find showers and laundry facilities. Black bears roam Quetico, so take extra precautions with food at all camping areas. Bears have a keen sense of smell and have been known to break into cars for an empty soda can or a gum wrapper. Pets: Leashed pets are permitted in park and campgrounds but not in any beach areas. Reservations and fees: Ontario has a central reservation phone number for all provincial park campgrounds: 888-668-7275. There is a nonrefundable fee for each reservation made.
