Roan Mountain State Park
Description
The mountainous park, located 5 miles from Cherokee National Forest, is distinguished by its 600 acres of natural rhododendrons, which are in peak bloom from mid to late June. Visitors enjoy cross-country skiing, trout fishing, hiking, tennis, children's playgrounds, basketball, and an outdoor pool. There is a downhill ski area about 30 minutes away in North Carolina's Pisgah National Forest area. Boating is nearby. Rental cabins, tent and RV camping, and grills are available, along with handicapped-accessible sites. All of the campsites are first-come, first-served, but reservations are required for the cabins. Pets: Leashed pets are permitted, but not in the cabins or in the cabin area.
