Rogue River--Siskiyou National Forest

Conifers, mountain meadows, and shady stream beds characterize this 1.8 million-acre forest in the southwest corner of Oregon. Divided into two parts--Rogue River National Forest and Siskiyou National Forest--and encompassing a variety of terrain and 200 miles of rivers, the forest offers many recreational opportunities. River rafting enthusiasts know Siskiyou as the "whitewater capital of Oregon," and the Rogue River, one of five wild and scenic rivers in the state, is atop their list. Hikers and horseback riders trek along 400 miles of trails that dip into deep valleys, then rise up into the mountains of the Cascade Range. In the northeast section, the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail runs through the Sky Lake Wilderness within the forest boundaries. In the southwest section, visit the 988-acre water recreation hub, Applegate Lake, which has myriad opportunities for fishing, boating, swimming, hiking, and camping. In this area, you can also follow part or all of the scenic, self-guided Siskiyou Loop Discovery Tour through the mountains. With winter comes blankets of snow and both downhill and cross-country skiers. Alpine enthusiasts find the Mt. Ashland Ski Area in the southwest area of the forest, close by Interstate 5. Before you enter the forest, stop at one of the ranger stations to pick up information about the more than 40 forest campgrounds; picnic facilities; and other amenities, facilities, and activities. Stations are in Medford, Jacksonville, Ashland, Butte Falls, and Prospect (all in Oregon)..
