San Jose Museum of Art

The emphasis here is on modern and contemporary art---fitting in a place as forward thinking as San Jose. The permanent collection has roughly 2,000 paintings, sculptures, photographs, digital-media, and other works by both established and up-and-coming artists, many from the West Coast. Don’t worry if you’re new to 20th- and 21st-century art: guided tours, “Art Packs” with gallery-related activities, and changing exhibits built around specific themes all help you to interpret things.

Ponder your experiences in the on-site café, and then go pick out your very own modern memento from the selection of books, jewelry, decorative items, toys, and other items in the gift shop. Note that pairing a visit to this museum with one to the Tech Museum of Innovation will provide further insight by showing just how technology is influencing art.
