Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens
Description
Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens, located in Akron, Ohio, is the former home of Frank “F.A.” Seiberling (founder of Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company) and his family. Completed in 1915, it is one of the most important remaining examples of an American Country Estate built by the wealth created during the Industrial Age at the turn of the twentieth century —when the emergence of modern America made Akron the “Rubber Capital of the World.” Open to the public from April through December, this historic estate includes a 65,000 square foot, 65-room Tudor Revival Manor House, the Gate Lodge, Gothic-style conservatory and more than 70 acres of artfully landscaped gardens and grounds. Stan Hywet, Old English for “hewn stone” quarry, derives its name from its pre-history, the site of an old stone quarry. It is Akron’s only National Historic Landmark and is accredited by the American Association of Museums.
