Sun Records

In 1954, a truck driver named Elvis Presley dropped into Sam Phillips’s studio to record a song as a birthday present for his mother. The rest, as they say, is history. Phillips and his label not only gave Elvis his start but also laid down tracks for Jerry Lee Lewis, B.B. King, Howlin’ Wolf, Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash, and Carl Perkins.

Original instruments and recording equipment give you a real feel for those early days of rock and roll. It’s also still a working studio, with sessions scheduled at night to accommodate the steady stream of daytime visitors. Tours are offered daily 10:30–5:30 at the bottom of the hour.
