U.S.S. Alabama & Battleship Memorial Park
Between the time it was inaugurated in 1942 and decommissioned in 1947, the sixth vessel named U.S.S. Alabama was honored with nine battle stars for service in the Pacific theater of WW II. The chance to explore both this South Dakota-class battleship and the U.S.S. Drum submarine is the main draw of a visit to Battleship Memorial Park. But the park is also home to 40 pieces of military equipment and fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft used by U.S. armed forces in conflicts ranging from WW II to Vietnam. Highlights include an M4 Sherman tank, a Vietnam PBR gunboat, a P-51D Mustang long-range fighter plane, a B-52 bomber, an A-12 Blackbird spy plane, and a UH-1H Huey helicopter. Wear comfortable, non-skid shoes and plenty of sunscreen. You’ll be doing a lot of walking both on land and at sea here, and the sun reflecting off Mobile Bay can be fierce.
