Wayne National Forest

Description

This 129,000-acre forest boasts 300 miles of hiking, off-road vehicle, and equestrian trails (appropriate permits required). A 9.5-mile rugged hiking trail called Archer's Fork Loop traverses the most scenic part of the Irish and Jackson Run areas; it is recommended for day hikers only. This is the most rugged and unique trail in the forest, passing numerous rock shelters and outcroppings as well as vintage oil and gas wells. Irish Run Natural Bridge, on the upper slope of a steep hollow, is a massive sandstone tribute to erosion. The bridge is 51 feet long, and 39 feet above the ground. All trails are closed to everything but foot traffic from December 16 to April 14. Numerous campgrounds offer a range of amenities, from basic sites to areas offering electric hookups and hot showers. All individual campsites are first-come, first-served. Reservations are recommended for all other campsites. Handicapped-accessible sites are available. Hunting and fishing are permitted (again, only with proper permits). The park is located four miles north of Marietta on Rte 7. Pets: Leashed pets are permitted.
