White Sands Missile Range Museum

Description

This region was the site of the world’s first atomic bomb test and where scientists tested the German V-2 and other rockets that eventually took America into space. The main draw at this museum is the Missile Park, with more than 50 projectiles and plaques about each. Indoor exhibits highlight rocket and missile science and the people behind it.

A gift shop sells souvenirs and Native American crafts. The museum, though privately operated, is on the U.S. Army’s missile range. To enter, stop at the visitors center near the gate and be prepared to show your vehicle registration, driver’s license, and proof of auto insurance.
