New Hampshire packs many kinds of vacation adventures into one small state. You need not drive very far to transition from sea spray to wooded lakesides to alpine vistas. This drive begins in Manchester, then slides seaward to soak up Portsmouth. Only an hour’s drive northwest brings lakes Winnipesaukee and Squam, edged with pines and beloved by generations of boaters. And not very far north of there, the White Mountains sit astride the state. Swing up around the westerly edge of the range to find Bretton Woods in the shadow of Mount Washington, then wind gradually back south, past the lakes and the farms, until nearly at sea level again.
