Stroll the banks of the Yellowstone River and you may well find something extraordinarily beautiful hidden inside otherwise ordinary-looking rocks. The Yellowstone is prime hunting ground for the famous Montana moss agate, a gemstone highly prized for its translucent background, colored bands and treelike (what the experts call dendritic) interior scenery. While agates occur everywhere along the river's 450-mile stretch across Montana, you'll have the best luck on the lower river between Custer and Sidney. If you'd like to take a break from searching, the towns and villages along the river are full of interesting diversions.
