For this tour, ditch the car and leave the route to the captains of Alaska's Inside Passage ferry boats. You'll coast along the panhandle, one of the most protected and scenic sea-lane systems in the world. Mainline ferry service is available from Bellingham, Washington, and Prince Rupert, British Columbia. On the ferry you'll see rain forests, fjords, and glaciers. Your first stop is Ketchikan, which with the Saxman Native Village and Totem Bight Historical Park features the largest collection of totem poles in the world. At your next stop, Wrangell, you'll be welcomed by wildlife such as bald eagles, sea lions, and seals. Continue your ferry ride to Petersburg, where you can sample the catch of the day at most of the local restaurants. The historic town of Sitka is the capital of Russian America, as well as the next stop on your tour. Later, enjoy your final stop on the ferry tour, Skagway. The Inside Passage comes to a dead end here, but highway and bus services connect with the Alaska Highway at Whitehorse.
