Absorb history on this tour up and down the Connecticut River. Begin by heading south to the village of Old Saybrook and travel back in time when you visit Fort Saybrook Monument Park, originally constructed in 1635. In summer you can visit the 200-year-old General William Hart House. Farther north, the Sundial Herb Garden in Higganum features a 17th-century knot garden (a square-framed garden that originated in the United Kingdom) as well as other Colonial gardening styles. Finish your trip with a visit to the Gillette Castle, a towering, fieldstone mansion built more than 70 years ago.
