Follow in the footsteps of woodsman Daniel Boone through the wild region of Kentucky called Land Between the Lakes, a 170,000-acre national recreation area. To reach the Land Between the Lakes, a peninsula flanked by Lake Barkley and Kentucky Lake, take US 68 to where it intersects "The Trace," the region's only road. At this juncture sits Golden Pond Visitor Center and its planetarium used by the Western Kentucky Amateur Astronomers. The Trace runs north-south linking several sites: Fort Henry, location of a major Civil War battle; two ruins of iron ore furnaces; The Homeplace, an 1850s living history farm; and Elk & Bison Prairie, a 700-acre prairie restoration wildlife habitat. Land Between the Lakes accommodations include campgrounds, Lake Barkley State Resort Lodge, and Kentucky Dam Village State Resort Park. Dine on Southern specialties at Patti's 1880s Settlement and Miss Scarlett's Restaurant, both in Grand Rivers, Kentucky. The Museum of the American Quilter's Society is in Paducah, Kentucky.
