The only American who can truly claim the title "The King," Elvis Aaron Presley gyrated his way into the hearts of a worldful of fans in the middle of the 20th century. Born in poverty, he became a teen idol, a movie star, and a Las Vegas legend who outdrew all the blackjack dealers in town combined. After his untimely death in 1977, at the relatively young age of 42, Elvis' life as pop culture phenomenon really began to rock 'n' roll. Today thousands of faithful fans flock to Memphis every August around the anniversary of his death for a week of reverence, remembrance, and revelry. If you don't plan side trips to Hollywood or Vegas, it's possible to take a weekend Presley pilgrimage that includes both Elvis' birthplace and his final resting place. The King is dead. Long live the King.
