Hope became famous when Bill Clinton, who was born and raised until age 8 in this small town, was elected president of the United States; it's an entertaining place to stop on your Southwest Arkansas road trip. The Clinton Birthplace Home, along with the Hope Visitor Center & Museum, offer Clinton memorabilia and displays. Stop at downtown Hope, Arkansas's Whistlestop Cafe for catfish, fried green tomatoes, and other Southern delights. Head north on US 278 for a quick stop in tiny Washington, Arkansas, to visit the county courthouse and Old Washington Historic State Park. Go north farther still on US 278 and turn northeast on AR 27 to the town of Murfreesboro, Arkansas. Diamonds are a big allure here, and Crater of Diamonds State Park is the place to keep the diamonds you find while picking through acres of diamond fields. The 4.25-carat "Kahn Canary," found at Crater of Diamonds in 1997, was worn by First Lady Hillary Clinton at presidential inaugural galas in 1993 and '97.
