William Faulkner, a Mississippi native, once wrote “The past isn’t dead. It isn’t even past.” Along this trip, the past does indeed seem to occupy the present. Layers of history lie as deep as the Delta soil. Travelers can explore ancient Indian mounds, an early American wilderness trail, antebellum homes, Civil War sites, the realm of King Cotton, and the birthplace of the blues. But history isn’t the only thing that makes this trip special. There’s great scenery, from eerie cypress swamps to majestic forests to endless pancake-flat expanses of cotton fields. There are countless places to enjoy wonderful down-home Southern food. And there’s the graciousness and hospitality of the people, who seem genuinely glad you’re there.
