Your Georgia Shores road trip includes stops on beautiful St. Simon's Island, Georgia, a trip to nearby Brunswick, Georgia, and a side journey to Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, the vast wetland that's home to cypress trees and an interesting network of canals. First stop is the Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation in Brunswick, where you'll learn about life and culture on an 1800s-era rice plantation. Head south toward Old Town Brunswick for a look at wonderfully restored late 19th- and early 20th-century homes. The streets and squares here were laid out in 1771. Stop for Brunswick Stew at Brunswick Station Cafe before traveling east toward the coast and St. Simon's Island, Georgia. Fort Frederica National Monument offers ranger-led tours of the circa-1736 town and fort; on the southern tip of the island, the 1872 St. Simon's Lighthouse still works and has an adjacent museum. Your Georgia Shores road trip concludes with a trip inland to Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, west of Kingsland, Georgia. You'll get a chance to spot a variety of animals, from alligators to wild turkeys; the Okefenokee Swamp, a huge, peat-filled bog, is estimated to be 7,000 years old.
