Description

Begin in the Shawnee National Forest, which spreads across more than 277,500 acres and is popular for its peculiar rock formations and rich wildlife. Cruise along the Ohio River in this tour of Southern Illinois and Indiana. Persist north and you'll find Cave-In-Rock State Park, a 55-foot wide cavern with an impressive view of the Ohio River, a tributary of the Mississippi River. The cavern was used once by outlaws, bandits, and river pirates as well as the notorious Harpe Brothers, murderers fleeing execution in Kentucky. Travel east into Evansville, Indiana, to visit the Mesker Park Zoo where 700 animals live in a woodland setting. The park and interpretive center at Falls of the Ohio State Park in Clarksville is a great endpoint to this tour. Here, be sure to see the world's largest exposed Devonian-era fossil beds.
