Description

Push offshore from Sandusky, Ohio, and you'll quickly slip into the laid-back rhythm of the Lake Erie islands. You can leave most of the driving to ferry captains, who transport vehicles and passengers to several villages where boutiques, restaurants, and pubs cluster close to ferry docks. Make Kelleys Island, Ohio, your first port-of-call on this boating adventure. Sample a Lake Erie perch sandwich and sip back a beer on the patio at Village Pump, a boaters' haven. Then catch a ferry to Put-in-Bay, Ohio, on South Bass Island. Heineman's Winery offers wine tastings and tours of Crystal Cave, the largest geode in the world. Also check out the Chocolate Caf's Victory and International Peace Memorial while you're here. Last stop: The Marblehead Lighthouse and museum on the Port Clinton, Ohio, peninsula. Visitors can climb the spiral staircase and look out on amazing views. Ferry back to Sandusky and see the islands from a different perspective atop the roller coasters at Cedar Point Amusement Park.
