Looking for something beyond the theme parks and sunny beaches of Florida? Try a day in the town of Lakeland for some homegrown aeronautic excitement. With more and more people flying their own planes and some even building their own, Lakeland has taken off as a hub for small-plane enthusiasts. At the airport here, you'll find a museum featuring historic and modern small, personal aircraft. Better yet, each year the annual Sun 'n Fun Fly-In sees thousands of aircraft from all over North America landing in Lakeland. Pilots and their passengers come for a week of exhibitions and the general camaraderie of the airborne, while the public gets to see this exciting brand of aircraft firsthand. And not so far away, another flight museum will let you find out what it feels like to fly, even if you haven't yet earned your wings.
