Description

How do you tackle the Big Apple? One slice at a time. This itinerary serves up highlights of its oldest and most layered slice: lower Manhattan (aka downtown). Both the Dutch and English settled here. After the Revolution, Washington bade his troops farewell here. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, it gave countless immigrants their first glimpse of America and their first home in it. Of course, lower Manhattan is also where tragedy struck that fateful September day in 2001. Constants throughout it all? Wall Street fortunes made and lost, goods shipped in and out, and the din and motion of an ever-evolving, never-sleeping city.

Travel Tips: Visiting the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island will take up the better part of a day. The tenement museum and other Lower East Side sights, with a stop at McSorley's in the East Village, could fill a half or a full day, depending on how much wandering you decide to do. The 9/11 Museum and Memorial require the better part of a morning or afternoon.

The lack of a grid of numbered streets makes navigation tricky, but lower Manhattan’s history- and culture-rich neighborhoods truly invite exploration on foot. That said, numerous subways and buses serve downtown and can quickly whisk you elsewhere in Manhattan---or Brooklyn, for that matter. A stroll to the latter borough across the Brooklyn or Williamsburg bridges is a great way to spend an hour or two. So is a free ferry ride out and back to Staten Island from downtown’s Whitehall (South) Terminal. Also note: this trip pairs well with the Connecticut Coast & River Tour.
