Description

Twenty years before the California Gold Rush, thousands flocked to Dahlonega, Georgia, a lovely Blue Ridge mountain town on the outskirts of the Chattahoochee National Forest, which produced more than $6 million in gold in the mid-1800s. Your northern-Georgia road trip starts in Dahlonega, where you can pan for gold at Consolidated Gold Mine or Crisson Gold Mine. A trip south on GA 60 brings you to Gainesville, Georgia, a picturesque town with preserved historic buildings and the Northeast Georgia History Center, featuring an 18th-century cabin that belonged to Cherokee Indian Chief White Path. Head north of Gainesville on GA 11/US 129 to the old logging town of Helen, Georgia, which has been transformed into a Bavarian village, complete with cobblestone streets and Habersham Winery, Georgia's oldest place for wine tastings.
