Description

Much of your trip through the northwest Missouri River Country of Montana retraces the steps of the Lewis and Clark Expedition of the early 1800s. Begin in Great Falls by paying a visit to the Giant Springs State Park. Discover the art of raising rainbow trout and salmon, and see some of the largest freshwater springs in the world. The Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge, south of Hays, lies on 1.1 million acres and has five refuges. Within this varied environment of badlands, prairie, and forest live elk, bobcat, sharp-tailed grouse, and dozens of other species. Head south to Glasgow and catch a glimpse of Fort Peck Dam and Fort Peck Lake. The dam is one of the largest man-made earthen dams in the world while the lake has a shoreline as long as California's. Drive south to Glendive for a quick visit to Makoshika State Park where a Triceratops skull is on display.
