Description

Little did James Marshall know, when he fished those shiny yellow nuggets out of the stream at Sutter's, that his discovery would ignite one of the largest mass migrations in the history of the planet. If he did, he might have actually staked a claim. As it was, he died a poor man, as did many of the "forty-niners" who streamed into the Sierra Nevada foothills in the wake of his find. Highway 49 winds for over 300 miles through the heart of gold country, from Oakhurst north to Downieville. Along this route and its sundry tributaries, you can explore any number of gold-rush-era towns, be they charming, thriving communities or ghost towns. This trip traces the phenomenon from its gold-panning beginnings through hard-rock mining to hydraulic mining.
