Love and romance aren't the first things people think about when they think of Virginia. Generally people tend to associate the state with America's colonial past, a fun place to go and see re-enactors churning butter and milking cows in historical museums or "living" villages. Virginia's tourism industry has been making an effort to show visitors that their state is a little hipper than all that old-timey stuff. Travel brochures and Web site tourist info pages proudly exclaim that "Virginia Is For Lovers." Well, the Romantic Virginia weekend tour will let you test that claim by giving you and your companion an opportunity to enjoy some of Virginia's more romantic charms. Your weekend headquarters will be the Virginia Beach area, from which you'll be able to explore some of Virginia's many attractions. We've thrown in a few historic sites so that you can at least pretend that you went to Virginia for its dusty charms. A good way to start your getaway is to contact the Virginia Beach Visitor Center, located at 2100 Parks Ave., Virginia Beach (757-437-4888). The Visitor Center can provide you with lodging, dining, and "getting around" information, as well as schedules of the many Virginia Beach area seasonal events. Virginia Beach is one of America's favorite resort destinations. You'll find plenty of places to stay during your getaway. The lodging venues range from low-cost affordable to higher-end expense. You might want to check out the Colonial Inn, located at 2809 Atlantic Avenue (757-428-5370), or the Oceanfront Inn, located at 2901 Atlantic Avenue (757-422-0445). You'll also find a wealth of restaurants to choose from including swanky, romantic venues like the Coyote Cafe & Cantina, located at 972-A Laskin Road (757-425-8705), and the Isle of Capri Restaurant, located at 39th Street and Atlantic Avenue (757-428-2411). You might also want to take one of the many romantic riverboat cruises in the area. For example, the Spirit of Norfolk, located about 15 miles west of the Virginia Beach resort area in Norfolk, VA, offers fine food, dancing, and live entertainment during lunch and evening cruises at affordable prices (757-625-1463).
