Description

If you're passing through the "Little Ozarks" with the little ones, don't expect a lot of theme park razzle-dazzle. Things are pretty basic in these parts -- and pretty entertaining and informative for not a lot of money. The area's frontier and industrial legacies are showcased at several quirky little stops, among them one of the world's largest strip-mining cranes, which welcomes visitors of all ages into the control room (and kids over 13 out onto the boom). Nearby you can see where and how the notorious Dalton Gang of frontier bandits got its comeuppance. And while there aren't any tram rides or costumed mascots, other area museums pay tribute to the region's railroad history and two favorite sons who grew up to be circus clowns.
